The name 'Winnie-the-Pooh' is the name given to Christopher Robin's toy stuffed-bear he received for his first Christmas present from his parents. Christopher Robin named his toy bear after a real bear called 'Winnie' that lived at 'London Zoo', and a swan that Christopher was fond of as an infant, and would call 'Pooh'. An army officer brought the bear to London Zoo in 1921 from Winnipeg, Canada. And hence the bear is named after its origin. Christopher Robin's toy bear is named after the bear in the zoo, and he loves his bear dearly. He seems to treat it like a possession, literally dragging it everywhere.
Okay, so one of my coworkers shared a theory that she has on Winnie-the-Pooh . Her theory was really funny, but I felt the need to share mine . . .
Okay, when I was pregnant with my oldest, I wanted to avoid Winnie-the-Pooh. And this is why . . .
Each character in Winnie-the-Pooh stories represents some sort of dysfunction and/or emotional or psychological problems. As you enter the world of Winnie-the-Pooh, you find all these creatures (including Winnie) who has serious issues.
Winnie-the-Pooh is a helpless, fat, lazy, glutton. Yes, that seems a little harsh to some, but these are issues for some people.
Tigger is ADHD or something. He is constantly this unbridled and manic display of enthusiasm. I love Tigger, he is my favorite character, but you can’t tell me you don’t see an ADHD and/or a manic child in there.
Piglet is fraught and insecure. If he could help it, he wouldn’t step a foot out of his house! He has some sort of anxiety or agoraphobia issue.
And who can’t see that Eeyore is depressed? I would dare say that he is the other end of Tigger. To be manic depressive, you have to have manic and you have to have depressed. You can’t get any more depressed than Eeyore.
I have one word for Rabbit. OCD (okay, so it’s an acronym).
And everyone (who I share this opinion with) always asks me, but what about Kanga and Roo? Hello Mama’s Boy. Come on, cut the apron strings already. (Yeah, that was a little harsh, but I have to make my point that all these characters are messed up.)
Now Owl, what can I say about Owl, he is calm, nurturing, clever, etc. But he
is a know-it-all. He thrives on being the know-it-all that everyone turns
to.But someone did stump me today. She asked my opinion on Gopher. I hadn’t even thought about him. That is going to take some more evaluation.
Okay, now, let me have it . . . I am sure you have comments. :-)
And let me just say that my daughter had a Winnie-the-Pooh bedroom and yes, they are cute (even if they have issues).
