On the Twelfth Day of Christmas - The Magic of Christmas

 Wow! Christmas day is finally here and wouldn't you know....it's time for the magic.

First and foremost, Jesus. Jesus got off his thrown at the right hand of God and came to us as a helpless, crying babe. When you really think about it, but the journey to the cross and the story of the cross didn't start with Jesus praying on the mount. It didn't even start with his ministry at 30 years of age. In all reality, it didn't even start with the crying of a babe in a "manger", it started with the start of the world. Can you wrap your mind around that? God, or the God head, three-in-one, created the world and Adam and Eve knowing that Jesus would have to die for us. Wow! Talk about magic. The magic of love!

For a lot of others, the magic of Christmas is Santa Clause and snow and any number of other worldly things, but thanks to a reminder from Sippy Cup Chronicles, I have here to tell you that the magic of Christmas is not in worldly possessions/gifts/toys, it's in family. The magic of Christmas is in those we choose to share our holiday and even our life with. It is the children he has blessed us with, biologically or inherited (I have one of each). It is the family that we were born into (although they themselves may not always be magical or even nice to be around, there is a reason God placed us in their lives). It is also in those that we chose to be a part of our family (such as husbands/wives, in-laws, and even friends that are as dear as family).

So as you enjoy your holiday, I wish you all the magic that this day can provide!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas - Christmas Books

I started off wondering what Christmas books I could possibly list here. Then, I came across my all time favorite Christmas books. There are only two.

1. The Bible. What other book tells the story of the reason for this season?

2. The Night Before Christmas.
 This book is a cloth book that was actually sewn by my grandmother.

On the Tenth Day of Christmas - Homemade Gifts

I have never really had the guts to make homemade gifts. It's one thing for someone to not like what you buy them (even if a lot of thought is put into it). It would be very different and 10 times more hurtful if I made something for someone that they didn't like like. That and the fact that I am a perfectionist and could never make it well enough.

But, here are some really neat ideas:

1. For the Ice Cream Lover in your life:
DIY: Ice Cream Kit
2. For the little princess in your life:
Tea Party Accessories
3. For the little detective:
Detective Kit
4. For the woman who needs a little ME time:
Candy Cane Bath Salts
5. For the chef in your life:
Homemade Casserole Tote

You know, I may just try one or two of these in the future!

On the Ninth Day of Christmas - Christmas Cards

I love Christmas Cards! I love giving/sending and receiving Christmas cards!

Every year, right around or just after Thanksgiving, I would lug out the Christmas cards from the year before and my Rolodex. I would make an extensive list of people to send Christmas cards to. Then I would proceed to address envelopes and right a short, personalized note in each card. Then, I got married and my family size doubled. It was no longer just me and my daughter. Then, it was (in no particular order) me, my daughter, my hubby, and my step-daughter. I suffered a bulging disk and then no time to be able to take hours to do my normal routine.

This year, however, I tried, for the first time, a photo Christmas card. Wow! What a time saver! I always enjoy receiving these form friends and family and now, I don't feel that I have to write a personal note on each card. (A picture really is worth a 1,000 words.)

Here are some other Christmas cards that I love!

On the Fifth Day of Christmas - Christmas Traditions

My family is still sort of young so we are still figuring out our traditions, but with the hubby's help, we have picked out a few to share.

Our dirty little penguin and our monkey doodle
We all decorate our Christmas tree. Whatever day we decide to decorate our tree, we all four do it together. And, this is sort of a big thing for me. (Not a big thing, as in it's really important. Big thing, as in really difficult.) I am a perfectionist, as well as self-proclaimed OCD. I cannot stand it when there are too many similar ornaments together, but I am actually really proud of my girls this year. I have not had to go back and "fix" the tree.

My girls get to open one present on Christmas Eve. It is always a present that I pick out and the present that I pick is always pajamas. Typically, the oldest gets penguin pajamas and the youngest gets monkey pajamas.

The hubby reads "Twas the Night Before Christmas" on the night before Christmas.

The hubby also reads the nativity story from the Bible on Christmas day.

The hubby stealing a gift during Dirty Santa
It is always just us on Christmas morning. I love my husband's family, but I love our family more. It is really stressful for me to be around my kids when they are around their grandparents (from any side). You moms know what I am talking about. Grandparents spoil and kids know it. Mine know better than to cross the line, but they are not shy about pushing it when we are around grandparents. So, for me to really enjoy Christmas morning, it is best for it to just be us. Plus, it reinforces our bond to share these special moments together.

Christmas Eve with the Sinks. Typically, the hubby's father's side of the family gets together on Christmas Eve. So far, we have made it to each one. It's nice to know when to count on that get together being held.

Dirty Santa with the Yountz. The hubby's mother's side of the family gets together usually the weekend before Christmas and we always play Dirty Santa. I look forward to this every year and again, it's a get together that I can plan on a consistent basis.

Wow, that is more traditions that I thought we had!

On the Fourth Day of Christmas - Christmas Decorations

I love Christmas decorations. I think as the years have progressed, I have gotten a little less overwhelming with my decorations. It used to look like Santa or an Elf threw up in my living room. Here are some pictures of some of my favorite decorations:
2005 - The only year we strung popcorn

2010 - My Christmas Village (a gift from the hubby the year before)
2011 - Love my poinsettia blanket (oh yeah, gotta love the dogs, too)

2011 - Christmas tree this year!

On the Third Day of Christmas - The True Meaning of the Candy Cane

I am deviating a bit from the prescribed plan, but I just love this legend and had to include it!

Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?
Stripes that are red
Like the blood shed for me

White is for my Savior
Who's sinless and pure!
"J" is for Jesus My Lord, that's for sure!
Turn it around
And a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd
Was born for Me!

On the First Day of Christmas - Christmas Cookies

I am linking up with Angela on Angela's Favorite Things for the 12 Days of Christmas.

Day One: Christmas Cookies
Ruth Boone's Peanut Butter Balls

Every years, my grandma makes these and passes them out, usually there is a family member or two that hoards them.

Ingredients
    * 1 cup  crunchy peanut butter
    * 1/4 cup  margarine or butter, softened
    * 1 cup  powdered sugar
    * 2 cups  Rice Krispies®
    * 1 1/2 cups  semi-sweet chocolate morsels
    * 2 tablespoons  vegetable shortening
    * 54   mini-muffin paper cups

1. In large electric mixer bowl, beat peanut butter, margarine and sugar on medium speed until thoroughly combined. Add rice krispies cereal, mixing thoroughly. Portion mixture, using rounded teaspoon. Shape into balls. Place each ball in paper cup. Refrigerate.

2. Melt chocolate morsels and shortening in small saucepan, over low heat, stirring constantly. Spoon 1 teaspoon melted chocolate over each peanut butter ball. Refrigerate until firm. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.
Nieman Marcus Cookies
 Even though it is an urban legend, me and my family love this story and this recipe!

    My daughter and I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas & decided to have a small dessert. Because both of us are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Neiman-Marcus Cookie". It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and the waitress said with a small frown "I'm afraid not." Well" I said, "would you let me buy the recipe?"

    With a cute smile, she said YES". I asked how much and she responded, "Only two fifty, it's a great deal!" I said with approval, "just add it to my tab".. Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Neiman-Marcus and it was $285.00. I looked again and remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20.00 for a scarf. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "Cookie Recipe - $250.00". That's outrageous!!!

    I called Neiman's Accounting Dept. and told them that the waitress said it was "two-fifty," which clearly does not mean "two hundred and fifty dollars" by any POSSIBLE interpretation of the phrase. Neiman-Marcus refused to budge.. They would not refund my money, because according to them, "What the waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe - we absolutely will not refund your money at this point." I explained to her the criminal statutes which govern fraud in Texas. I threatened to refer them to the Better Business Bureau and the State's Attorney General for engaging in fraud. I was basically told, "Do what you want, we dont give a damn, and we're not refunding your money." I waited a moment, thinking of how I could get even,or even try to get any of my money back. I just said, "Okay, you folks got my $250.00, and now I'm going to have $250.00 worth of fun."

    I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover in the United States with an e-mail account has a $250.00 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus... for free..She replied, "I wish you wouldn't do this" I said, "Well you should have thought of that before you ripped me off", and slammed down the phone on her.. So, here it is!!! Please, please, please pass it on to everyone you can possibly think of. I paid $250.00 dollars for this... I don't want Neiman-Marcus to ever get another penny off of this recipe....

    (Recipe may be halved):
    2 cups butter
    4 cups flour
    2 tsp. baking soda
    2 cups granulated sugar
    2 cups brown sugar
    5 cups blended oatmeal (measure oatmeal and blend in blender to a fine powder)
    24 oz. chocolate chips
    1 tsp. salt
    1 8 oz. Hershey bar (grated)
    4 eggs
    2 tsp. baking powder
    3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
    2 tsp. vanilla

    Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet..Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.. Have Fun!!!

    This is not a joke - this is a true story... Ride free citizens!!!! This isn't some stupid chain letter either.. pass it on.. if you don't, you won't die or get dumped.. you'll just do the world an injustice...

    Thanx...
