Graduating 5th grader

I remember my 7th grade graduation. I was an army brat and my school went directly from Elementary School to Junior High at 8th Grade. I remember standing in the gym and celebrating this milestone with my family. I remember winning some sort of presidential award and a Hewlett-Packard Scientific Calculator.

This week, however, our older daughter finished fifth grade. She went to school wearing a dress she’d specifically picked for the occasion, her first pair of real high heels, and a little make-up placed by me that morning. She was beautiful and so very grown up!

Despite everyone's best efforts, I never cried. I watched the baby that I nursed, the toddler who I taught to walk, the little girl who demanded that I drop her off in the front of her school in Kindergarten. I watched her cross the stage and graduate from Elementary School.

She will soon head into the unknown of middle school.

About ninety fifth graders graduated from elementary school. Many of them have been together since kindergarten, but next year, they might not see each other much. Their school will be split between two middle schools. Some will take band or orchestra, while others will opt for electives. They might have PE or lunch together, but they might not.

Next year, by the grace of God, my oldest will move on to make new friends, meet new temptations, encounter opportunities to make choices good and bad. She will change. Things will never be the same.
