Is OMG blasphemy?

Okay, I want your opinion this time. I was sitting in church the other day listening to Bill McKenzie teach my Wednesday night class (not normally his class, but I got more than snoring out of it, so I can't complain) when I got to thinking about blasphemy. I am not exactly sure why, but my mind strayed very briefly long enought for me to write the folling question:

"Is OMG the same as Oh My God?"

My first instinct says yes, but at the same time, sometimes I (and others) write OMG meaning gosh (not God). What is your take on this one?

OMG strikes me a "nicer" than Oh My God. Or maybe I should say less offensive. Sort of like how we used to spell "H E double hockey sticks" when I was little. But the history of it's use is still the same. It means the same, even if it sounds nicer.

What's your opinion? Is OMG the same of Oh My God? Is it blasphemous?

  1. I guess it would depend on how you mean it, might be one of those in your heart things. Good rule of thumb though, when in doubt, don't.

  2. When I say OMG, I am thinking and meaning oh my gosh or oh my goodness. I guess because I don't say Oh my God in my everyday life, I never think of OMG as oh my God. It's kinda like wtf or wth. I type/text them, but people who know me (the only people I text are people I know) know I mean what the freak or what the heck. I don't swear, not even in abbreviations.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
